About Us

Building Tenant Power in Lexington and Morehead KY

KY Tenants is a tenant-led organization fighting to win a Kentucky where everyone has safe, high quality, permanently affordable housing. Too many Kentuckians cannot afford a place to live, are living in undignified conditions, and are being forced out of our homes and communities. We organize for a transformed housing system where everyone has access to high-quality social housing so we can afford to stay in our communities.

Our Story

Since launching in summer 2022, the Lexington chapter has won $1.8 million for a right to counsel pilot program, placed over a dozen members on a Tenants’ Advisory Group for Lexington city government’s Department of Housing Advocacy & Community Development, worked with the city’s Homelessness Prevention and Intervention Board to increase representation of people with lived experience of homelessness in their decision-making, and won a ban on source of income discrimination. Currently, the Lexington chapter is organizing in federally-financed properties.

The Morehead chapter launched in early 2023, and, after knocking on thousands of doors and having hundreds of conversations over several months, our Morehead chapter is working on a campaign for a Proactive Rental Inspection program, as well as founding a Community Land Trust.

KY Tenants is a long-time member of a federal campaign that won rent caps in over a million federally-financed units.
