KY Tenants builds fighting building-, neighborhood-, and city-level tenants unions that build and leverage our people and material power as tenants, and collectively bargain for improved conditions and fairer leases.
Our tenants unions include the Westminster Tenants Union on Versailles Road and the West End Neighborhood Tenants Union in the West End neighborhood of Lexington. We have two other building-level pre-unionization organizing projects.
MOREHEAD CAMPAIGNS
PROACTIVE RENTAL INSPECTIONS

KY Tenants’ Morehead chapter is fighting for proactive rental inspections in Morehead, KY. Right now, renters in Morehead are living with mold, broken heating, pest problems, and unsafe conditions. The current complaint-based system puts the burden on tenants, who risk retaliation from their landlords when they call asking for needed repairs to be made.
Regularly scheduled inspections prevent problems before they harm people, and similar proactive rental inspection programs in other rural communities have improved housing quality and increased economic development. So far, the Morehead chapter has won two additional Code Enforcement officers for the city of Morehead to inspect housing units, as well as one for Rowan County. We are base-building to pursue this fight further. Join us to get involved!
EASTERN KY COMMUNITY LAND TRUST

The Eastern Kentucky Community Land Trust is a project of KY Tenants that seeks to create and preserve permanently affordable housing that is resident-controlled and community-controlled, accessible to all who need it, owned rather than rented wherever feasible, designed with positive ecological impact, and structured to expand permanent housing opportunities for lower-income Eastern Kentuckians.
The KY Tenants Morehead CLT Team is expanding the CLT’s bylaws, developing its transitional board of directors, and raising funds to purchase its first properties.
MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY: STUDENT CHAPTER

Morehead State University’s student chapter of KY Tenants is fighting for additional maintenance staff at MSU.
The number of maintenance staff hired by the university has decreased steadily throughout the past decade, resulting in a decrease in work orders completed, delays in needed maintenance and repairs in dormitories and university buildings, and deteriorating health and safety for students living in dorms.
MSU’s student tenants are demanding additional maintenance workers to be hired by the university to ensure that needed maintenance happens in a timely manner.
